12 Jan 09 Club update

  • Monday swim: It was great to see the large turnout to both last week’s swim and run! Last Monday, there was a large turnout for the swim, and we expect today to be the same if not a greater turnout. We’re monitoring the turnout over the next two weeks, and if it continues to grow as expected, we will be addressing how to reduce the congestion in the pool without impacting the workouts. Therefore, if you’re concerned that the pool is simply too crowded, this will not be a problem long term.
  • Thursday run: If the temperature drops below -15 (as expected), there will be a shortened run this week. If the temperature is too cold or there is too much snow, we will be emailing everyone at least one hour prior to the training session with a cancellation. Let’s hope the weather stays in the single digit negatives. :)
  • GTC Social Night at Latinos: Every third Thursday of the month, we meet at Latinos (Paisley and Norfolk)  after the run (go as is, or do a quick change…we’ll all smell together). Even if you don’t run this week, please feel free to come out for a drink or a bite to eat.
  • Sunday Spin session: On Sunday January 25th, there is a spin class from 9-10 am or from 10-11 am at Victor Davis (upper floor above the hockey rink stands). If you are interested in attending and wish to sign out one of the two spin trainers, please email us at info@guelphtriathlonclub.ca. Don’t forget to pump up your tires (or was it just me that didn’t use my bike since the summer? )
  • Sunday GTC Sleigh ride! This Sunday from 3-5 pm, there is a GTC sleigh ride event…for those who are going and have any questions, please email social@guelphtriathlonclub.ca.
Final thoughts - a lot of people get run down the second week back from the holidays because of the weather, work, kids etc….be nice to yourself this week and don’t worry about pushing too hard at the pool or at any other workout. Have fun and enjoy.

06 Jan 09 GTC members do some fancy footwork

One boy’s shoes caught Pat Sproat’s eye in gym class.

The runners were extremely worn out. The treads were gone. They were as smooth as a pair of slippers.

The coach of the intermediate boys volleyball team at Westwood Public School worried the student wouldn’t be able to run, turn, jump or pivot safely on the gym floor. Sproat glanced around at the 17 other pairs of feet. She noticed many of the other shoes looked the same — pretty tired.

“Boys are so hard on their shoes and they grow up so fast, it’s hard to keep up with their growth.”

As part of the Guelph Triathlon Club, Sproat realized many athletes change their shoes every season and decided to put out a public appeal for a few pairs of gently used running shoes.

“I was happy for five pairs of shoes,” she said. “I didn’t have any huge aspirations.”

Sproat’s fellow runner Scott Cameron sent out an email to runners with the Guelph Victors Running Club and the Guelph Triathlon Club on Sproat’s behalf, and the contributions began flowing in.

A Toronto Argonauts trainer donated three pairs of freshly washed shoes. Another man went out and bought two new pairs of Nikes. A man Sproat worked out with at a local gym gave her the shoes off his feet.
